Prepare the bed before choosing its owner

Three conditions come first: the survivor is rescued, the bed sits inside your protected base where the resident can reach it, and the bed is sheltered. An outdoor bed and a covered bed are not the same job — the roof and shelter guide covers that check.

Give the bed a clear approach. A bed that exists but cannot be reached does not solve the assignment.

Recognize the assignment moment

Author-captured scene: the player holds the Summoning Staff and aims at an unoccupied bed, with the assignment prompt naming the survivor Oswald.Open full-size image
Aiming the Summoning Staff at an unoccupied bed offers the assignment prompt. Author-tested capture from a January 28, 2025 Dot Esports guide; the exact game build is unrecorded and the control prompts it shows may differ from yours.

Read the scene for what it identifies — staff, unoccupied bed, assignment prompt — and follow the prompt your own HUD shows rather than copying a key from the image.

Automatic claiming versus a chosen resident

Both routes start from the same conditions: a rescued survivor and a reachable, sheltered bed inside the protected area. What changes is who makes the choice.

Shared conditions first, then automatic claiming or a chosen assignmentA rescued survivor and a reachable, sheltered bed inside the protected area are the shared conditions. The automatic branch gives a free bed to the nearest free survivor; the Summoning Staff branch assigns a chosen resident and can also reassign one who already has a bed. Left to itself, the game gives a free bed to the nearest free survivor. The Summoning Staff route exists for the opposite case: you have already decided which resident gets this bed — including moving a resident who already sleeps somewhere else.

Assign a specific resident to a specific bed

The chosen route, start to finish.

  1. Rescue the survivor

The resident must exist at your base.

  2. Place the bed

Reachable and sheltered, inside the protected area.

  3. Select and summon the resident

Choose the intended owner and call them over.

  4. Aim the Summoning Staff at the bed

    The bed must be unoccupied.

  5. Follow the HUD prompt

Confirm the assignment your game offers.

Confirm the result — and what reopens it

Success is the intended resident owning the intended bed. Check who the bed belongs to after the prompt rather than assuming the interaction finished the job.

If an assigned bed loses its shelter, the housing task can reopen — the current Farmer Needs Shelter quest text treats a sheltered bed as the requirement. Restore the cover first; re-assignment comes second.

Food, satisfaction, patrols and the wider resident-housing system are separate questions this page does not claim to answer.
